Putt like a Pro!
an article by the Tenison Park Instructors

The top priority for an average player to improve his or her lag putting should be speed control.  You can improve speed control by first better understanding the relationship between slope and distance.

For downhill slope, the length of your stroke will be shorter, while conversely uphill sloping putts will require a longer stroke.  Once the slope has been determined, you must then consider your intermediate target.

In order to choose your intermediate target you must first determine break.  Is the putt right to left or left to right?  With this in mind, your intermediate target should be the top most point of the break between the ball and the hole.  To aim at your intermediate target your body alignment should be parrallel to the line of your putt, while the club face position should be perpendicular to that line.

At this point, posture should be considered.  With longer putts you should both address the putt in a more upright posture (torso), and be sure to relax both arms and grip pressure.  Proper posture and grip pressure will allow a more free flowing, longer stroke.

Tempo for a longer stroke is very important.  The tempo for longer strokes should increase in both length and cadence.  When you increase the length of your stroke you must aslo quicken the tempo and pace to match.

Lag Putting Drill:
Set up on a putting green with some string and tees 2 lines approximately 3 feet apart and parrallel to each other.

Now back away from the lines about 25 feet and put 2 tees in the ground parrallel to the string lines.  These 2 tees are where you will putt from.  The goal of this drill is to increase the number of balls out of 10 that you putt and stop between the two lines.

Our PGA and LPGA Instructors are here to assist you.  Please contact Scott Akers, Director of Instruction, or Brian Smith at 214-670-8385.  Or contact Brian "Sully" Sullivan or Becky Maciolek at 214-670-1402 if you are looking for assistance with any part of your game.

New for GHIN in 2010

Effective 2010 the TGA will be changing its revision schedule to recalculate handicaps twice a month on the 1st and 15th for 24 revisions per year.
A significant benefit is that there will no longer be two days between when a club "transmits" member scores and when a golfers handicap is updated.  Golfers will be able to post scores via www.ghin.com up to 11:00pm central time for the revision the very next day.

Best Of Dallas 2009

Tenison Highlands
Best Public Course

Consistent upkeep is one of the most important factors to consider when planning a round of golf, as you don't want to find yourself three-putting on greens as slow as U.S. Open rough. Fortunately, you can always depend on Tenison Highlands to be in better condition than most other public courses. That it can be whipped into championship shape quickly is a big part of why the USGA chooses it for qualifying rounds, and why the Dallas City Championship tournament is held there each year. Of course, the rolling terrain, tons of trees, nice pro shop and rich history don't hurt, either. The one downside is that it's on the pricey side for a muni. But if you're on a budget, there's always Tenison Park's other course, Tenison Glen—a decent course in its own right.
