FAQ 's

Course Maintenance
Top Dressing Greens

Q: Why do you top dress the greens? It makes the putting surface sandy and slow!

A: Actually top dressing does the exact opposite! Topdressing provides a better surface for ball roll because it creates a firm, uniform surface that exerts minimal resistance on the ball as it rolls across a green. Research has shown that greens that are not topdressed have poorer quality than those that are topdressed as little as two times per year.

With continued demand from golfers for greater ball-roll distances, superintendents have begun top dressing more often throughout the growing season. Here are some of the benefits of topdressing regularly: 1) Produces a smooth, firm putting surface, 2) Increases the ball-roll distance, 3) Allows reduced mowing heights which produces faster green speeds, 4) Reduces thatch layer, and 4) Protects the crown.

Hole Locations

Q: Why do they cut the holes in the locations on the greens that they do?

A: The maintenance staff follows a routine when cutting holes each day. They follow a front, middle, back routine. If the pin on hole number 1 is cut on the front on Monday for example, on Tuesday it will be cut in the middle and on Wednesday it will be cut on the back of the green. The location in these areas may vary so that the greens do not get worn out due to the amount of play that we get. Please let us know if you feel a hole location is unfair or in a location that is incorrect.

Golf Course Policies

Alcohol and Personal Coolers

Q: Can I bring my own alcohol to the golf course in a personal cooler?

A: No. It is against Texas state law to bring alcohol onto or take alcohol from an establishment that serves open container alcoholic beverages. We, as most golf courses, also do not allow personal coolers to be brought onto the premises. This allows us to better manage outside alcohol being brought on. We do have coolers that may be rented for a $20 cash deposit that will be refunded when the cooler is returned.

Q: What is the dress code at Tenison Park?

A: Although our dress code is not very strict, we do prefer that players wear collared shirts. We do not allow metal spikes or shoes that are detrimental to the golf course turf. Men are not allowed to wear sleeveless shirts or tank tops. Shirts must be worn at all times. Players that show up to play in improper attire will be asked to either purchase something from the golf shop or asked to return in proper attire.
